BRYAN, TEXAS – The 2024 U.S. Paralympics Cycling Road Open came to a close Sunday with a full day of road racing competition at the Texas A&M –RELLIS campus in Bryan, Texas. Nineteen U.S. athletes took home road open titles in their respective events.

Athletes were competing this weekend to vie for spots on the 2024 UCI Para-Cycling World Cup tour. The Team USA roster is expected to be announced next week. The world cup tour is an important step in the qualification process for the Paralympic Games Paris 2024.

In the tightest race of the day, Owen Daniels (Fontana, California), Ryan Pinney (Phoenix, Arizona) and Brandon Lyons (Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania) finished the 55-kilometer MH3 road race nearly in tandem, with Daniels edging yesterday’s time trial champion Pinney and Lyons.

After a close time trial race yesterday, the trio of MH3 racers all ranked in the top five overall men’s racers.

As he aims for his third career Paralympic Games and first as a cyclist, Travis Gaertner (Burien, Washington) was the overall winner of both the MH4 road race and the men’s combined class handcycle competition.

Gaertner placed second in yesterday’s MH4 time trial to Matt Tingley (Rochester Hills, Michigan). The former Paralympic champion in wheelchair basketball spoke after the race about the growth he’s seen in the sport domestically.

“Just having a bunch of good MH4s has made us push each other, and we were pushing each other the whole race today,” Gaertner said. “It took a really big effort to come out with a win today after [Matt] beat me yesterday. We’ve got a critical mass in the people we’ve brought here to race against each other, almost like we do internationally. It’s fantastic.”

Bringing home their second wins of the weekend were world champions Dennis Connors (Beaverton, Oregon), Kate Brim (Lowell, Michigan), Aaron Keith (Woodinville, Washington), Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colorado), Jamie Whitmore (Somerset, California), Samantha Bosco (Claremont, California), Alicia Dana (Putney, Vermont) and Oksana Masters (Louisville, Kentucky). Paralympians Freddie De Los Santos (Hopewell Junction, New York) and Monica Sereda (Tampa Bay, Florida) were victorious in the MH5 and WT2 races, while 2023 world championships medalist Barry Wilcox (West Jordan, Utah) completed his sweep of the MH1 events.
