Bosco, Larsen Add Two More Medals to Team USA Collection in Rio
by Annemarie Blanco
RIO DE JANEIRO – Paralympian Sam Bosco (Claremont, California) speed to her first medal of the Rio 2024 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships snagging a silver in the women’s C4 individual pursuit. The medal marks Bosco’s 22nd career world championship podium appearance and first silver in the event. Bosco’s performance brings her one step closer to redemption at the Paralympic Games Paris 2024 after an injury caused her to miss the Tokyo Games.
“I think it’s good to be in this spot and it’s been a long time coming since I’ve gotten bronze the last six years in this individual pursuit,” said Bosco. “To have one step up on that podium is just extra momentum and motivation to keep giving it my all and shoot for the stars every race. Hopefully, there’s more in Paris.”
One day after placing just shy of the podium, Bryan Larsen (Windsor, California) returned to the velodrome with a fury securing his first-ever world championship medal with an impressive third-place finish in the men’s C4 scratch race. Larsen returns to competition tomorrow morning with another podium quest in the men’s C4 1km time trial.
“Redemption - that’s the only word on my mind especially from yesterday,” said Larsen. “I’m relieved and excited after 22 years of racing. Nothing’s gifted in this sport and I feel like I earned it today.”
“I got really nervous when they were starting to wipe down the track [due to weather] but luckily it didn’t cross my mind during the race because I was pushing those tires pretty hard, and I think a little moisture wouldn’t have been a good combination.”
The morning session saw Paralympian Clara Brown (Falmouth, Maine) secure her spot in the finals round of the women’s C3 individual pursuit competition with a final ranking of a world top four performance after the evening session. Paralympian Joe Berenyi (Aurora, Illinois) raced to a top-ten placement in the men’s C3 class. Alongside Bosco in the women’s C4 division was Paralympian Shawn Morelli (Meadville, Pennsylvania) who garnered a top six finish.
In the men’s B 1km time trial, tandem duo Branden Walton (Windsor, California) and pilot Spencer Seggebruch (St. Louis, Missouri) made their Rio debut finishing 19th while Monday’s bronze medal duo of Michael Stephens (Colorado Springs, Colorado) and Joe Christiansen (Lyons, Colorado) rounded out the top seven of the world’s best.
Competition resumes at 9 a.m. local time on Saturday, March 23 for the penultimate day of racing.
